2006 Rocky Mountain IH Rendezvous

By Will Marsh

The 2006 Rocky Mountain IH Rendezvous was held on July 14-18th, 2006 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds in Salida, Colorado. High in the scenic Arkansas River Valley 140 miles southwest of Denver, 94 registered participants, their families, and a number of daily visitors gathered to participate in the festivities of the largest independent show for International Trucks in the nation.

After checking in and setting up camp on Friday, the show began in earnest on Saturday morning with trucks lining up for the Show 'n Shine by classes. The judging here is by Peer Voting, with each registered entry recieving 1 judging sheet. You must vote and turn in that sheet for your entry to be eligible for an award in the Show 'n Shine.

Several vendors were in attendance including D&C Extreme, IH Only, and Scout Pro. Scott McCandless from McCandless International Trucks of Colorado arrived with a 2006 CXT that was very well recieved by the crowd. Through the day there were lots of people socializing in the Show 'n Shine area and the Main Building, as well as in the vendor building and various areas of the campgrounds on site.

At 4pm the trucks started lining up for the Parade through downtown Salida. Lead by Tim Hackathorn in the Court Services SII and Scott McCandless in the CXT, approximately 60 trucks participated in the parade.

After the parade, everyone gathered back at the Main Building for the Wild Game Feed. The menu included Elk Steak, Barbeque'd Elk, and Turkey a'la King, along with various side dishes and watermelon for dessert. As usual, Maggie Coonrod and her team did a superb job! Afterward, many of the diners stayed to socialize with both old friends and new ones at the Binder Social.

Sunday dawned early with the 2 guided trail trips lining up at 8AM to roll off at 8:30. At 9AM the Arkansas Valley Flywheelers brought their Pulling Sled out, and approximately 20 different trucks opted to "hook up" at least one time. Dale Durham's Terra outpulled Steve Cavender's ScoutII and Warren Lee's Travelall by less than 2 feet for the Title.

Meanwhile there was more socializing going on around the fairgrounds, and the vendors were set up and selling items most of the day. Unfortunately, the teeter-totter event was canceled due to mechanical problems, and a scheduling problem canceled the RTI Ramp Travel contest.

At 1PM the "Ice Racing in the Dirt" started in the small arena, and continued until 3PM. After the formal bracket is run, they continue to run "Exhibition" races for anyone that's entered. It's loads of fun, and any registered truck is welcome to participate.

The Trophy and Door Prize Presentation began at 4pm, with Gary Neff's 1977 ScoutII taking home the Best of Show Trophy.

I managed to win the "Ugliest Truck" award. It had to be the "last year's duck tape" seatcovers. I'll spare y'all the pic.

The socializing continued after the Presentation around the fairgrounds at various campsites, with Allan Ericson taking a busload (Literally!) of kids and adults into town for ice cream. You could hear them singing as they drove through the fairgrounds upon their return!

We packed up for the drive home Monday morning, since I needed to be back to work Tuesday. There were several more guided trail trips on Monday and Tuesday for participants that wanted to join them. Maybe next year.

The truck count was down from last year, mostly due to high gasoline prices. There were a couple of SNAFU's, which are par for the course when you have a show of this size. All in all, congratulations to the RMIHR Commitee for putting on another excellent show.

If you're looking to attend a Family Oriented show, you couldn't pick a better one. This was the 8th consecutive year we've attended, and we're already looking forward to seeing all our Binder friends next July. There are plenty of Non-IH things to do and see in the area as well, with lots of historic interest sites, whitewater rafting, the Royal Gorge, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the Colorado Mountains nearby. It's definitely worth the trip.

We hope to see y'all there next year!
